What Threads is, how to say it, how to sign up, who sees your posts, and whether a shop should bother. Based on Instagram's own help pages, with a comparison to Instagram and X.
Threads is Instagram's app for viewing and sharing public conversations. A post can be plain text, and you can add links, photos or video. This guide answers what people search for most: how to say Threads, what it means, whether you need Instagram, who sees your posts, and whether a shop should use it. Every feature fact comes from Instagram's own help pages, last checked October 2026, because Threads changes fast. For another short-text network, see the guide to growing followers on X (Twitter).
Key takeaways
- Threads is Instagram's public text app, open to Instagram or Facebook accounts
- Followers on Threads are separate from followers on Instagram and Facebook
- Shops with daily short stories can try it. Fix Instagram consistency first
What is Threads, how do you say it, and what does it mean
Instagram's help page says Threads is an app for public conversations from Instagram where you can view and share posts. Posts and replies can hold short text, links, photos, video or a mix. Other people follow you to see your posts in their feed, and can reply, like, repost or quote them.
On pronunciation and meaning: the official page gives no Thai reading. In Thai people usually say thread or threads in a Thai accent. The word thread literally means a strand of yarn, and in social media it means a chain of messages that forms a conversation.

How Threads and Instagram are connected
Most people first ask whether they need Instagram. Per Instagram's help page, you sign in with an Instagram or Facebook account, and you can create one Threads profile for each such account. The profile is connected to the account you logged in with. A support blurb on the help site also mentions signing up with an email address or phone number, but sign-up steps can differ by version, so check the options in the app.
Three things matter for shops.
Followers are separate: people who follow you on Threads do not change your follower count on Instagram or Facebook, and the reverse
Name and username: if you signed up with an Instagram account, they are shared between Threads and Instagram
Bio, link and profile picture: editing on Threads affects only Threads. Editing on Instagram changes only Instagram unless you choose to import it into Threads

This section comes from the Create a profile on Threads and Where to manage settings for Threads pages of the Instagram Help Center, last checked October 2026. In-app options may differ by version.
Who sees your posts
According to the help pages, who can see and interact with your posts depends on your profile privacy setting. Your name, profile photo, username and bio are always public, whichever setting you pick.
Public profile: anyone can see your posts and replies, on or off Threads
Private profile: people who do not follow you see only the public profile details
Users under 18 start with a private profile
Before you post you can choose who may reply: anyone, only profiles you follow, or only people you mention. Shops that do not want noisy comments can limit it. Public posts may also be suggested by Meta on Instagram and Facebook; you can turn that off in the Threads privacy settings under Suggesting posts on other apps.
WarningBefore opening replies
If you delete your post, replies other people already made are not deleted. Turn on reply approvals or limit who can reply if you cannot review comments every day.
How to post and use Threads
The main steps below follow Instagram's help pages and apply to the Threads app and threads.com. Button and menu names can differ slightly.
Create a profile
Sign in with an Instagram or Facebook account, then choose whether to import profile details or edit them only in Threads.
Set the profile to public or private
Shops that want new people to find them should choose public. Go to Settings, then Privacy, to switch at any time.
Start a post
Start a new thread, type your text, add a link, photo or video if you like, and choose who can reply before posting.
Reply, like and repost
Join other people's conversations instead of only posting. A reply becomes your own post in the replies tab.
Edit text
Only text can be edited, within 15 minutes of posting. You cannot add or remove attachments. After that, delete and repost.
Can you message on Threads? Yes. The help site has a page about viewing, reacting to and replying to messages you receive on Threads. Messages from people you follow go to your inbox, those from people you do not follow go to message requests, and the sender can see when you have read it.
How Threads differs from Instagram and X
The table uses official facts where they exist. The suited-for row is our interpretation and may differ from what your shop sees.

Should a shop use Threads
There is no official figure on which shops should use Threads, so our answer rests on the shop's situation, not statistics.
Do
You can tell a short shop story every day, such as new stock, sold-out items or a question for customers
Your Instagram posting is already steady and you have time left
The owner writes the posts and enjoys talking to customers in public
Don't
Instagram posting is still irregular. Fix that first
You cannot answer comments every day
You expect Threads to bring orders right away, since no official data supports that
Our own criteria, not Meta rules
If you try it, set a small goal: 4 weeks, 3 posts a week, then see whether more people click through to your Instagram profile or message you. If nothing moves, go back to the platform where your customers really are. For weekly planning, see the content calendar of Thai festivals and payday.
A first Threads post for a shop
Start with a short post about one real thing from the shop, then end with one question or link. Fill {today's shop news} with something that really happened, such as new stock or a question customers ask often.
First shop post
ExampleExample: invented shop
Today the invented candle shop packed 20 boxes. Customers often ask how many hours the candle burns. Which story should we tell next? Tell us in the comments. The shop and numbers are invented.
What Instafollow does not sell for Threads
When we checked our catalog on 3 October 2026, Instafollow had no follower or like service for Threads. So we will not tell you that buying such a service somewhere is a Threads shortcut. If your customers are already on Instagram, what you can do is make the Instagram profile look trustworthy enough to follow.
This paragraph promotes our services. The Instagram followers page and all Instagram services are options if you want the account people reach from Threads to not look empty. Ordered numbers do not make posts sell better and do not guarantee sales.
