Engagement is the number of times people interact with a post, such as likes, comments, saves and shares. See what counts on each platform, two engagement rate formulas and a worked example.
Engagement means people interacting with your post by liking, commenting, saving or sharing it. This article covers the social media meaning only, not engagement as in a wedding or an employee's commitment to a company.
By the end you will know what each platform counts as engagement and how to work out your engagement rate with a basic calculator.
Key takeaways
- Engagement is interactions on a post: likes, comments, saves, shares
- Engagement rate = total interactions / followers or reach x 100
- Pick one formula and compare your own posts only; never mix formulas
What is engagement on social media
Engagement means people did something with your content instead of scrolling past. Liking, commenting, saving or sharing all count. Viewing and moving on does not.
Instagram's Help Center calls it interactions and describes it as the number of actions people take on your content, such as likes, comments, saves and shares. Facebook's help page counts reactions, comments, shares and clicks on your posts.

Engagement is one of the terms online shop owners meet most often. The other terms are gathered in What Digital Marketing Is.
What counts as engagement
Platforms do not count exactly the same things. This table summarises what each one counts, based on the platform's own help pages.

Views and reach are not engagement. They say how many people or how many times content was seen, not what people did next. Reach is the number of people who saw a post. Impressions or views are the number of times it was shown or played, and one person can add several. More in Reach vs Impressions vs Views.
Engagement rate formula with a worked example
Engagement rate is interactions compared with a number of people. Platforms set no single formula, so tools pick different denominators. Three are common; the example below works out the first two.
Common engagement rate formulas

Total interactions are likes + comments + saves + shares. On Facebook you can add clicks to match what Meta counts. The example uses an imaginary coffee shop with 5,000 followers. All numbers are made up to show the method, not real shop data.
Example: three posts from an imaginary coffee shop

Add the interactions
Add likes, comments, saves and shares for one post.
Pick a denominator
Use followers (5,000) or that post's reach. Use the same one for every post.
Divide, then multiply by 100
The result is a percentage; one decimal place is enough.
Try post A first as an example.
ExampleExample: post A
Total interactions = 220 + 18 + 40 + 12 = 290
By followers = 290 / 5,000 x 100 = 5.8%
By reach = 290 / 4,100 x 100 = 7.1%
Posts B and C work the same way. The results are below.
Example: results for three posts
Scroll the table sideways to see the remaining columns
Post C has the most interactions and scores 10.0% by followers, but only 5.1% by reach, lower than post A, because it reached far more people. The two formulas tell different stories. By followers shows how your follower base responds. By reach shows how much the people who saw it liked it.
What engagement rate counts as good
No universal number fits every account. Results depend on platform, content type, account size and formula, so this article sets no fixed benchmark. The practical way is to compare against yourself.
Open the stats for your latest 10 to 15 posts and calculate them all with one formula
Find the middle value and use it as this account's baseline
Look at posts above the baseline and find what they share, such as topic, format or posting time
Do
Use one formula across all posts
Compare posts with your own posts from nearby dates
Write the formula next to the number
Don't
Switch formulas between posts
Compare with figures from others without knowing their denominator
Treat a reel and a single-image post as the same kind of thing
Numbers compare only when calculated the same way
Where to see your engagement numbers
On Instagram, use Insights, available for professional accounts (business or creator) according to the Help Center. Tap View insights under a post or reel to see its interactions, and tap the (i) icon for each metric's definition. You can pick a date range up to the past 90 days, per the same page.
Opening it and reading each screen is covered in reading Instagram Insights to plan your next post. On Facebook, use your Page's Insights; menu names can differ between app versions.
Which signal is stronger
Likes, comments, saves and shares do not carry equal weight for recommendation systems. This article does not repeat that; a dedicated article covers it.
ArticleLikes vs Comments vs Saves: Which Signal Does the Algorithm Weigh Most?Likes are the easiest action and say the least about deeper interest. Know which signals matter, then design posts that earn them. How far do bought likes change engagement
Buying likes adds only to the like count. It does not make people comment, save or share. The result is a high like number with other interactions unchanged, and the share in the by-reach formula can look odd. No one can promise the platform will show the post to more people because of its likes.
WarningBefore you decide
Bought likes are not people interested in your product. Do not count them as real customer interest, and if you report results to a brand, separate the numbers and say so.
This paragraph is about Instafollow's own service. If you want a post to start with some likes before you promote it, there is an Instagram likes service priced per 1,000 with no password required. See Instagram likes.

What does engagement mean?
On social media it means interaction with content, such as likes, comments, saves and shares. In other contexts it can mean a wedding engagement or an employee's commitment to a company.
How do you pronounce engagement?
It sounds like en-GAYJ-ment. In Thai it is usually written เอ็นเกจเมนต์.
What is the engagement count?
The total of interactions on a post or account in a period, such as likes, comments, saves and shares. It is a count, not a percentage.

How is engagement different from reach?
Reach is how many people saw a post. Engagement is how many times people did something with it. A wide reach does not mean many interactions.
What engagement rate is good?
No benchmark fits every account. Calculate your own past posts with one formula and use the middle value as your baseline.
Summary
Engagement is the number of interactions on a post, such as likes, comments, saves and shares. It counts what people did, not how many saw it. Calculate engagement rate as total interactions divided by followers or reach, times 100, then keep one formula to compare your own posts. Start today by opening the stats for your last 10 posts and finding your baseline.
