Reach counts people who saw a post; impressions and views count times. Compare the three in one table, see the names each platform uses, check what Meta changed on Facebook, and pick which to read first.
Reach counts people who saw it, meaning the content showed on their screen at least once, with each person counted one time. Impressions and views count the number of times content was shown or played, so one person watching three times counts as three.
This article compares the three numbers in one table, shows what each platform calls them, and says which to check first. It also checks the claim that Facebook is removing reach.

What is reach
Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once. Instagram's Help Center describes it as Accounts reached, a count of unique accounts that saw the content, whether or not it was played. The Thai help page calls it จำนวนผู้ชม.
In this article reach means the social media metric. It has nothing to do with REACH, the European Union chemicals regulation that often shows up in search.

Reach, impressions and views are part of the online marketing vocabulary summarised in What Digital Marketing Is.
Reach, impressions and views side by side
These three numbers are often mixed up. The table shows what each one counts.

According to Instagram's Help Center, views are the number of times your content was played or displayed, across reels, posts, stories, live videos and ads. For reels, reach differs from views because views can include several plays by the same account.
ExampleImaginary example
An imaginary clothing shop posts one reel. 2,000 people saw it and it was played 3,200 times in total.
Reach = 2,000 and views = 3,200. Views per person = 3,200 / 2,000 = 1.6, so on average each person watched 1.6 times.
All numbers are made up to show the method, not real shop data.
What each platform calls these numbers
On-screen names do not always match textbook terms. This table summarises the names from each platform's help pages.

YouTube differs slightly. In YouTube's help pages, impressions go with impressions click-through rate, which measures how often viewers watched a video after seeing a registered impression on YouTube. That makes it a number for judging whether your thumbnail and title make people click, not just a count of sightings.
Is Meta changing Facebook's metrics
A search snippet says Facebook is removing reach and using views instead of impressions. We checked Meta's own pages. This is what we can confirm, last checked October 2026.
The current Meta Business Help Center page Insights on your Facebook Page still describes Reach alongside Views. Reach counts each person once and is an estimate.
Since October 2024 Meta added a Views metric in Meta Business Suite and the Professional dashboard, and renamed Plays on reels and videos to Views.
A Meta for Developers post dated 15 August 2025 announced that the Page Insights API impressions metric would be deprecated on 15 November 2025, with views replacing it.
Meta's Pages API documentation, updated 7 May 2026, also says that by 15 June 2026 a number of Page Insights metrics will be deprecated for all API versions. We did not record which metrics the notice lists. If your reporting tool pulls data through the API, check that tool's own notice too.
In short, on Meta's official pages the API drops impressions in favour of views, and reach still appears in Facebook's help page. We found no Meta statement that reach is being removed. Some outside sites report that reach will be replaced by unique views, but we could not confirm that on Meta's pages, so we do not treat it as fact.
WarningMind the change date
If your reports switch from impressions to views, do not join the two into one line chart because the definitions differ. Draw a divider at the date of the change.

An order that works for most posts is reach first, to know how many people saw it, then views divided by reach to see replays, then what viewers did next. The last number is covered in What is social media engagement and how to calculate it.
What to do when reach is low
Low reach means few people saw it. It does not say the content is bad. Compare reach with your follower count and with your earlier posts first. If posts with higher reach share something, such as a topic or format, repeat that. How to open the numbers is in reading Instagram Insights, and how to decide from them is in reading social stats to decide where to invest.

Bought views raise the views number but not reach from real people, and no one can promise the platform will show the post more. See Instagram views.

Thinking views equals people. Views can count the same person more than once.
Comparing numbers across platforms as if they were the same thing, when each counts differently.
Thinking high reach means good sales. Many people seeing something does not mean many people buying.
Reach FAQ
What is reach?
Reach is the number of unique people who saw your content on screen at least once, with each person counted once.
What are impressions?
Impressions are the number of times content was shown on screen. One person seeing it three times counts as three. In Facebook's Page Insights API, Meta tells developers to use views instead.
How is reach different from views?
Reach counts people; views count times played or shown. One person can replay, so views are usually higher than reach.
Why are my views higher than my reach?
Because views count repeat plays by the same person. If views divided by reach is 1.6, each person watched 1.6 times on average.
Is Facebook removing reach?
On Meta's official pages checked in October 2026 we found no statement removing reach, and Facebook's help page still describes Reach. What was deprecated is the impressions metric in the Page Insights API, replaced by views.
What does low reach mean?
It means few people saw it. It does not say the content is bad. Compare with your earlier posts and your follower count.
Summary
Reach counts people who saw something. Impressions and views count times, and can repeat a person. Platforms name them differently, and Meta replaced impressions with views in its API. Check reach first, then views divided by reach, then engagement rate. Open the stats of your latest post and try it today.
