What SEO is, explained for shop owners and page admins: how Google Search works at a high level, what you can do yourself, and a 30-minute starter checklist.

SEO means making your pages easy to find and easy to understand for people and for Google. It stands for Search Engine Optimization. For an online shop it means customers who type things like "sunscreen for sensitive skin" can find your product page or article without you paying for an ad every time. This guide is written for shop owners and page admins, not agencies, and ends with a 30-minute checklist you can start today.

Key takeaways

  • SEO means adjusting pages so Google understands them and customers can find them; it is not a trick on Google
  • Google works in 3 stages: crawl, index, serve, and does not guarantee every page gets indexed
  • You can start in 30 minutes with 6 steps, from picking a keyword to linking pages internally

What SEO is and how it differs from ads and social

SEO is adjusting content and pages to match what people search for and to be easy for a search engine like Google to read. Google itself says SEO helps search engines understand your content and helps users find your site. The traffic it brings is called organic traffic: visitors who arrive from normal search results rather than ads.

Google Ads

The biggest difference is time. Ads stop showing when you stop paying. A well optimized page can keep being found, but Google does not guarantee which page it shows or at what position.

SEO is one of the online marketing channels. The overview of all channels is in What Digital Marketing Is.

How Google Search works at a high level

According to Google Search Central, Google Search has 3 stages. Checked Oct 2026.

  1. Crawling

Automated programs called crawlers download text, images and video from pages they find on the web. Most new pages are found through links from other pages.

  2. Indexing

Google analyzes the text, images and video on the page and stores the information in a very large database called the Google index.

  3. Serving results

When someone searches, Google returns information relevant to that query.

WarningNo guarantees

Google states it does not guarantee that it will crawl, index or serve your page, even if the page follows its guidelines, and it does not accept payment to crawl a site more often or rank it higher. Be careful with anyone who promises a paid number 1 position.

SEO vs social: what should a small shop do first

A shop that already sells on Instagram, TikTok or LINE does not need to abandon social to do SEO. They serve different moments. Social reaches people who do not yet know they want something. Search reaches people who are looking for it right now.

Before

  • Social: people see posts in a feed, so you must keep posting to be seen

  • Good for awareness and familiarity

  • Measured by likes, comments and views

After

  • Search: people type what they want answered, and older pages can still be found

  • Good for people ready to buy or learn

  • Measured by clicks and queries in Search Console

Two channels compared

If the shop has a website or articles, start SEO on the product pages and main articles. If not, start with a clear profile that links to where customers can order. More in the social to marketplace funnel.

A 30-minute SEO checklist for a small shop

Pick the single most important page, such as the best-selling product or the article customers ask about most, and do these 6 steps on it first. About 5 minutes each.

  1. 5 min: pick one keyword

Choose words customers really type, for example from chat questions and comments. Search them on Google and check whether the pages that show up answer the same thing as yours.

  2. 5 min: fix the page title

Make the title unique, short and clear about what the page is. Google recommends a title that is unique to the page, clear, concise and accurate.

  3. 5 min: write the page description

Summarize in 1 to 2 sentences what the page offers and how it differs. No need to repeat the keyword.

  4. 5 min: make the content easy to read

Add subheadings, short paragraphs and answers to common customer questions. Use real information from your shop, not copied text.

  5. 5 min: add alt text to images

Write a short line about what the picture shows, for example "four mung bean mooncakes in a paper box". It helps screen reader users and Google.

  6. 5 min: link internally and check Search Console

Link to this page from your other articles with text that says what they will find, such as "see how to choose a size", not "click here". Then sign up for Google Search Console to see whether the page is indexed.

Summary checklist

Done 0/7

ExampleInvented example: a sunscreen shop

Product page "sunscreen for sensitive skin". Main keyword: sunscreen for sensitive skin. Title: "Sunscreen for Sensitive Skin, Light and Non-Greasy". The description summarizes ingredients and size, images have alt text, and the article "How to choose sunscreen" links to the page. The shop and product are invented.

SEO mistakes small shops should avoid

Do

  • Write for people first, with the keyword used naturally

  • Write real information about your shop

  • Update the page when price or stock changes

Don't

  • Repeat the keyword until it reads strangely

  • Copy product descriptions from other sites

  • Buy links or hire someone who promises position 1

Do and don't

Google's documentation says content should be made for people first, not to manipulate rankings. Ask whether the page is one you would bookmark or send to a friend. If yes, you are on the right track.

How long until it works

There is no fixed number. Google does not guarantee which pages it indexes and shows. Some pages are found quickly and some take longer. Check in Search Console whether the page is indexed, then watch queries and clicks monthly. Do not rewrite the same page every day.

While SEO builds, your social profile is still the first thing customers check. Instafollow's growth services can support it by making the profile look followed. Results are not guaranteed and it does not make Google rank your website higher. To bring more visitors to a website, see the website traffic service page and how to get more website visitors.

SEO FAQ

What is SEO in short

Making pages easy to find on Google by writing content that matches what people search for and structuring pages so Google can read and understand them.

Does a shop that only sells on Instagram need SEO

Not immediately. If you have a website or articles, start with product pages and main articles. If not, start with a clear profile.

Do I pay Google

Google says it does not accept payment to crawl more often or rank higher. Appearing in normal results is free.

What is Google Search Console

A free Google tool that shows which pages are indexed, what people searched and how many clicked. Set it up free with a Google account.

DIY SEO or hire someone

You can do the basics: titles, descriptions, content and images. For technical problems or a long-term plan, consider an expert and ask what the reports measure.

How many days until I rank

It cannot be said. Google does not guarantee indexing or display. Watch click and query trends in Search Console monthly.

Summary

SEO is making your shop's pages findable on Google. Start with one important page: pick one keyword, then fix the title, description, content, images and internal links, and check Search Console. Do not trust anyone who guarantees a ranking, because Google does not.
