Why TikTok accounts get banned: the four account statuses, the difference between a removed video and a ban, how to appeal per TikTok Help, and how to prevent it. Checked October 2026.
You opened TikTok to a message that your account is banned, or a video was removed. The first thing to know: a removed video and a banned account are different things, and the route TikTok offers is an in-app appeal. This guide sums up the reasons TikTok lists, how to check your status and the appeal steps per TikTok Help, checked October 2026. There is no shortcut and nobody can guarantee the outcome.
Key takeaways
- A real ban shows a banner at login. Check status in Inbox > Account updates
- If you think it is a mistake, tap Appeal. TikTok re-reviews, with no guarantee
- Do not open a new account to dodge a ban, it can get the new one restricted or banned
Removed video vs banned account
People say a TikTok ban for several situations, but TikTok treats them as different levels. Identify yours first, because the fix differs.

The four TikTok account statuses
TikTok Help says account status reflects your violation history over the last 90 days, and has four levels: Healthy, Fair, Severe and Banned. See your status and violation record on the Account status page.
Open Inbox
Tap Inbox in the TikTok app.
Choose System notifications
Tap System notifications.
Open Account updates
Tap Account updates. If you do not see it, swipe the tab bar to the right.
Each violation expires after 90 days and is no longer considered. The effect depends on how severe the policy area is and the feature involved, such as comments or messages. Repeated violations can restrict features or lead to a permanent ban. For some first violations TikTok offers optional in-app policy training that can lift restrictions, but not for severe violations.
Why TikTok permanently bans accounts
TikTok Help lists several reasons an account may be permanently banned. Grouped:

TikTok's Creator Academy adds that violating content is removed and the account gets a strike. If strikes reach the threshold within a feature or a policy, the account is permanently banned. Thresholds differ by topic and strikes expire after 90 days. The help pages we read do not give exact numbers, so do not trust figures passed around online.
NoteNot stated
The help page and Creator Academy checked in October 2026 do not state how long an appeal review takes or how many appeals you can file. Figures you see elsewhere for these two are not from TikTok.
Appeal a banned TikTok account
TikTok Help says that if your account is banned you can still log in to submit an appeal and download your personal data. TikTok deletes personal data after a period under law and its retention policy, and after deletion the account is no longer available, so do not leave it for long.
Log in to the banned account
The app shows a banner about the ban. Open the notification to read the reason.
Tap Appeal
Creator Academy says to tap Appeal in the upper right of the moderation result page and submit your request.
Answer what the app asks
The help page does not describe a text field. If the app asks for more information, answer truthfully and briefly.
Track the result
TikTok's safety team re-reviews and notifies you. Check status in the in-app Safety Center.
If the appeal succeeds, TikTok says it restores content and account status, except an account or video you already deleted. If it fails, the pages we read give no further route. If you do not see Appeal in the app, update the app and try again.
WarningAvoid these two things
Deleting violating content does not remove the violation from your account, and opening a new account after a severe ban can get the new one restricted or banned. Per TikTok Help the rule applies while the original restriction or ban is active.
Prevent a ban
Prevention is mostly reading the rules and checking status regularly. The list below is our guidance, not a TikTok requirement.

Why was my TikTok banned
TikTok Help lists reasons such as account requirement violations, severe violations, evading a penalty with a new account and repeated policy violations. See your notice for the reason on your account.
Can I recover a banned TikTok account
You can appeal if you think it was a mistake: log in and tap Appeal. TikTok does not guarantee the result and deletes data after a period.
Where do I check my account status
Tap Inbox > System notifications > Account updates. The statuses are Healthy, Fair, Severe and Banned.
How long do violations stay on my account
TikTok says violations expire after 90 days and are no longer considered.
Can I open a new account after a ban
Multiple accounts are generally allowed, but while an old account is banned or restricted, a new one made to avoid it can be restricted or banned too.
Summary
Work out whether it is a removed video, a restriction or a ban. Check Account updates. If you believe TikTok got it wrong, appeal with the Appeal button promptly, do not open a new account to dodge it, and expect an uncertain result.
